Lufthansa - Flight Cancellation and Delay Compensation Options
Important information about Lufthansa Flight Cancellation
Ultimate Guide to Claiming Lufthansa Flight Delay Compensation.
Lufthansa is the largest German airline and also the flag carrier for the country. Along with their subsidiary airlines, it makes up the Lufthansa Group which has more than 700 aircraft combined. The German airline daily experiences delays and cancellations but not everyone knows that you can often be compensated for this. We have made this guide to state what you can do and how we can help.
Lufthansa Flight Delay Compensation
If you have experienced a flight delay, you can often be compensated for this. However, this depends on the length of the delay and the reason for the delay. This is due to the EU Regulation 261 which came into effect in 2004. This protects passengers flying from the EU or with EU airlines. As Lufthansa is an EU airline, all of their flights within the last 6 years are protected by this law.
Lufthansa Cancelled Flights Claims
All airlines, including Lufthansa, may have to cancel flights. Why they are cancelled and when passengers were informed of the cancellation will depend on whether you can get flight compensation. For example, if Lufthansa has to cancel flights because they are not permitted to enter a country because of political unrest, this is unclaimable as the cancellation was a consequence of an extraordinary circumstance.
If Lufthansa cancels your flight, they must provide you with an alternative flight or a full refund. If you are unsure if you are owed potentially hundreds in compensation, contact us today and we can use our database to see if you have a valid claim.
Lufthansa Delayed Flights Claims
If your Lufthansa flight was delayed, you may be entitled to claim up to €600 in compensation. If you have been affected by a delay, you are entitled to certain care and assistance and possibly cash compensation, depending on the length of the delay.
However, this will all depend on the reason for the delay. Delays may occur for a variety of reasons, such as cabin crew sickness or weather. If the delay was a result of something within their control or because of their poor maintenance of aircraft, passengers would be eligible for a compensation claim. If it was outside of their control, this is called an extraordinary circumstance.
Lufthansa Denied Boarding Claims
Airlines may deny passengers boarding because of invalid documentation or they are unfit to travel by air. On the other hand, they could deny boarding because they have oversold the flight and there are simply not enough seats. This would result in some passengers being denied boarding to the flight.
If this happens to you, Lufthansa must provide you with alternative travel arrangements. If the alternative flight can get you to your final destination within 3 hours of the expected time, you will not be able to claim cash compensation. However, if it is more than 3 hours later than expected you are entitled to claim cash compensation.
Lufthansa Missed Connection Claims
Passengers may miss a connecting flight if the first leg of the journey was delayed, causing you to miss the second flight. If this has happened with Lufthansa, you could be entitled to up to €600 depending on the distance travelled, and the delay between getting to your final destination from the scheduled time. Whether or not the connection is inside or outside the EU, it does not matter as Lufthansa is an EU airline.
If this has happened to you, Flight Patrol can help you. Our team is equipped to deal with all types of situations including missed connections and we can fight for your owed compensation.

How Long do Lufthansa Take to Pay Compensation Claims
Lufthansa aims to process all claims within 2 months of receiving the claim. However, they can often take longer and individual claimants may not get the result you want and deserve- compensation.
Going through Flight Patrol is the best method, as we have a 99% success rate for valid claims. Furthermore, we have the knowledge and the aid of a law firm to progress the claim if Lufthansa refuses to accept liability which they often do. If this happens, we can take the airline to court to fight for your compensation using our own resources at no extra cost to you.
2-hour Lufthansa Delay
A Lufthansa flight delayed for two hours that is due to travel less than 1,500km cannot claim cash compensation. However, passengers are entitled to certain basic needs. This includes communication- two emails, faxes or phone calls; additionally, food and drink should be offered, possibly in the form of restaurant vouchers.
If you have not been offered food and drink, you can purchase it yourself (reasonably priced- a 5* steak can be argued against) and keep your receipts as you can claim this back.
3-hour Lufthansa Delay
You can claim up between €250 and €400 for a delay between 3 and 4 hours. The total sum will depend on the distance travelled by your flight, as longer distances will result in more pay.
Furthermore, the same care and assistance are also offered as a two-hour delay, so long as the flight distance is under 3,500km.
4-hour Lufthansa Delay
A 4-hour delay could result in €600 in compensation if the distance travelled is over 3,500km. For distances under 3,500km, the maximum that could be awarded is €400.
No matter the distance travelled, you will be entitled to the same care and assistance as you would a 2 to 4-hour delay. If your flight has been delayed for five hours, you can choose to cancel your flight and get a refund. If you do this it will allow you to find an alternative flight.
Lufthansa Refund/Cancellation Policy
For Lufthansa’s full refund and cancellation policy and a guide of how to cancel your booking, you can click here. All flights, whether purchased directly through Lufthansa or not, can be cancelled online on their website. However, if you have booked through a travel agency and would like a refund, it is best to go through the travel agency that issued the ticket.
Luckily, you won’t have to wait long as most refunds are dealt with within a few days.
Lufthansa Flight Compensation in Bad Weather
Lufthansa should pay compensation if passengers experienced a flight disruption that lasts an excess of 3 hours under the EU law. However, if it was due to an extraordinary circumstance the airline would not owe anything, as it is considered outside of the airline’s control.
The difficulty is to determine whether the weather condition is the real cause for the delay and can justify the disruption. Airlines should be equipped to deal with bad weather, so it is normally only extreme weather conditions that are considered to be an extraordinary circumstance. Check with Flight Patrol to see if your delay due to bad weather is classed as an extraordinary circumstance by calling us now- 03339961234.
Lufthansa Flight Compensation for Technical Faults
Technical faults are a problem airlines experience if their aircrafts are not properly maintained. These can range from lighting issues to the toilet door not closing properly. These can have severe effects for flights as until they are resolved aircrafts are often unable to take off.
If you have experienced a flight disruption because of a technical fault we can help you get the compensation you deserve. We can inform you whether you have a valid flight claim and pursue it for you if you provide us with your consent.
Lufthansa Flight Compensation for Strikes and Industrial Action
Lufthansa passengers rarely experience a strike, although when it does happen it can cause flight cancellations or delays. Some of these can be claimed for and some cannot. It depends on whether the disruption was the fault of the airline (internal strike) or was unavoidable (external strike).
If you are unsure, you can claim through Flight Patrol as we are experts in dealing with flights disrupted by strikes. We know when you can claim compensation for your disruption and can help you get the money you deserve.
Lufthansa Flight Compensation in Extraordinary Circumstances
Extraordinary circumstances are genuine reasons as to why flights are disrupted. These are unavoidable circumstances that is not the airline’s fault, consequently the airline would not have to pay passengers compensation.
There are numerous conditions that are considered extraordinary circumstances which range from security risks, air traffic control restrictions, political unrest etc. If you have experienced a flight disruption with Lufthansa and you are unsure if you are owed compensation, contact our team at Flight Patrol to see whether you are owed compensation.
What to do if Lufthansa Offers Vouchers
Lufthansa may offer you vouchers as compensation for their flight disruptions. Despite this, the worth of the voucher is normally less than what could be claimed in compensation. You can choose to accept, although we can normally get you much more in compensation.
If you are unsure, you can contact us to confirm how much you could be entitled to before either accepting or declining the voucher. Although, if the delay is under three hours and you are offered vouchers we suggest you accept.

- The flight number, where you departed from and arrived at and the date of flight
- The scheduled arrival time and the actual arrival time
- List of all passengers ho you were travelling with
- How much you are claiming for including expenses e.g. food and drink
What to do if Lufthansa Ignore a Compensation Claim
If Lufthansa ignores your compensation claim you can either take it to a court or the Civil Aviation Authority. Taking your claim to court will result in you incurring costs if you cannot win. Furthermore, without the proper knowledge of the EU Regulation 261 and past cases can make it difficult to win the court case.
Going through Flight Patrol is the easier option and we will pay any legal fees out of our own pocket and it will not affect your claim value. Additionally, we work on a no-win no-fee basis which means we will only take our agreed price if we provide you with your compensation.

Backing up your claim
To give your claim the best chance of success, check with the airline regarding exactly what caused the delay. Collect any evidence you can, such as flight documents, photos and receipts, keep any paperwork given to you by the airline. A successful outcome can depend heavily on evidence – particularly if the flight took place (or didn’t, as the case may have been) a few years back.
Ask the airline staff what you can claim for – both there and then and later on – and make a note of any details you’re given, plus staff names, times and dates. If you can, take contact details of the airline’s other passengers in the same situation.
You may be able to claim as much as €600. This varies according to the distance you flew, or should have flown, with different rates applying to short, medium and long haul flights, as follows.
What you can claim at the airport
For short haul flights, you can claim from 2 hours’ delay or more. The airline should cover the cost of food and drinks, and of 2 phone calls, emails or faxes. For medium haul flights, the delay time from which you can claim increases to 3 hours, and then 4 hours for long haul flights.
For longer delays of 5 hours plus, you have a right to refuse to board a flight that is delayed by over 5 hours, in which case the airline must refund you or offer alternative transportation.
In the case of a flight being delayed until the next day, the airline must provide overnight accommodation, as well as transfers to and from the airport. Make sure you get any promised services put down in writing and keep a copy. Sometimes, it is not always possible for the airline to provide all of their passengers accommodation in the case of a widespread disruption. If you find yourself paying for your own accommodation, keep all of your receipts and this should be reimbursed by the airline.
How Flight Patrol can help
Claiming flight delay compensation from Lufthansa is easier when you know how. Our experience means we can secure what passengers are entitled to, with a minimum amount of fuss. We will claim on your behalf, we have an experienced team of claims experts and we will secure your compensation without causing you any stress or hassle.
If you claim yourself, you could find that it takes a lot of time. You may even struggle to get anywhere, simply because you have little experience in dealing with such claims. The process could therefore be stressful and energy-sapping, as well as time-consuming, and you may need to do a lot of research to make any headway at all. Your chances of success will sadly be limited by the fact that you are not familiar with this process. Passengers complain that the process takes up time, requires experience, is stressful and has a low chance of success.
If we claim on your behalf, we can reach a conclusion professionally, simply and swiftly. We can offer a highly experienced team, a stress-free experience and, most importantly, a high chance of success with your claim.
