If you have been one of their unlucky passengers who has experienced a flight delay, cancellation or a denied boarding, you could be eligible for compensation. Carry on reading for more information.

American Airlines Flight Delay Compensation

Passengers of many airlines experience flight disruptions for a variety of reasons. Some of these cannot be helped and are for genuine reasons so the airline is classed as not at fault. However, if it is the airlines fault you may be able to claim compensation under EU Regulation 261.

It is worth noting that American Airlines passengers will only be able to claim using this regulation when experiencing a flight disruption from an EU country. This is because the EU Regulation 261 only protects flights that are operated by an EU airline or depart from an EU country in the law six years. As American Airlines is not an EU airline, the flight must be disrupted from an EU country.

American Airlines Cancelled Flights Claims

Hundreds of flights are cancelled at airports all over the world everyday. If you experienced one of these, did you know you might be able to claim compensation? Flight that were due to depart from an EU country but were cancelled are protected by the EU Regulation 261. If this has happened to you and the airline was at fault and you were only informed of the cancellation within 14 days of departure, you could claim up to €600 in compensation.

American Airlines Delayed Flights Claims

American Airlines may be liable for compensation if they delay passengers by a minimum of three hours from an EU country. This would depend on whether the delay was classed as an extraordinary circumstance. These vary, but are genuine reasons why the aircraft was delayed and is no fault of the airline. If the delay was because of an extraordinary circumstance you will not be owed any compensation.

However, if the airline was at fault and you departed from an EU country, you could be owed up to €600 per passenger. If you are unsure, contact the team at Flight Patrol and we can let you know whether you can claim.

American Airlines Denied Boarding Claims

American Airlines may deny passengers boarding if they oversell their flights which they do on occasion in the hopes that not every passenger will turn up to their flight. However, when all passengers do turn up, some will be denied boarding as there are not enough seats. If American Airlines do this and the flight departed from the EU, Flight Patrol can help you.

The EU Regulation 261 states that the airline should offer you an alternative flight. Additionally, if you got to your final destination at least three hours later, you can claim compensation for your ordeal.

If you are denied boarding request a Denied Boarding Certificate to act as evidence for when you claim compensation. Unfortunately, if you were denied boarding due to reasons that are not because of overbookings, we are unable to help you.

American Airlines Missed Connection Claims

A missed connection is when your first flight has been disrupted which causes you to miss your following connecting flights. If this was inside the EU, American Airlines would have to follow the EU Regulation 261 which highlights how they must get you to your final destination. If you get to this destination more than three hours later than the original scheduled time, you could be owed up to €600 in compensation.

For more guidance on missed connections, contact a claiming agency like Flight Patrol as it can be confusing as the regulation does not have to be followed when the flight departed from a non-EU country.

How to claim American Airlines Flight Delay Compensation

The best way to submit a claim against American Airlines is through sending a letter or an email. Attach all your information and the reason why you are claiming (follow the later section about a letter template).

Inform American Airlines that you are claiming using EU Regulation 261 and that you deserve the compensation as the flight departed from an EU country. However, it is not in their policies to provide compensation using the regulation.

This is why it is best claiming through Flight Patrol as we will handle the correspondence with the airlines to increase the chance of gaining compensation. We have a 99% success rate so you can trust us.

  • Up to €600 for all other American Airlines flights over 3,500km e.g. London to Phoenix.

If you would like us to check how much you could be owed, contact Flight Patrol. We can enter your details into our system to accurately tell you how much your claim could be worth.

How Long do American Airlines Take to Pay Compensation Claim

After you have filed your complaint about a delay or cancellation and requested compensation from American Airlines, you have to wait for a response. Unfortunately, airlines do not have a set time frame to respond to compensation claims. Although American Airlines state the request will be responded to within 30 days; it is also likely they will refuse to accept liability and not pay you compensation.

From here, you will need to either pursue the claim yourself or go through a claiming agency like Flight Patrol. We will handle pursuing your claim further, even taking the airline to court if necessary at no extra cost to you. Call us today to see what we can do for you: 03339961234.

2-hour American Airlines Delay

Passengers of American Airlines are unable to claim any cash compensation, nor are they able to get care and assistance from the airline. Flight departing from the EU who have been delayed for 2 hours would normally be able to get care and assistance from the airline in accordance with EU Regulation 261. However, only if the flight distance is less than 1,500km. As all American Airlines flights are over 1,500km, passengers will not be able to gain anything from a delay that is under three hours.

3-hour American Airlines Delay

If your American Airlines flight has been delayed between 3-4 hours, you could be eligible for compensation if the flight departed from a country in the EU. You could be eligible for:

  • Two phone calls, emails or faxes (if flight distance was under 3,500km)
  • Vouchers for food and drinks (if flight distance was under 3,500km)
  • A compensation claim value of up to €300

4-hour American Airlines Delay

American Airlines passengers who have experienced a flight delay of four hours and the flight departed from the EU are entitled to certain amenities, so long as the airline was at fault. This includes: communication (2 phone calls/emails and faxes) and reasonable amounts of food and drink, which can be provided in the form of vouchers.

However, in order to be entitled to this, the American Airlines flight would have to depart from an EU country.

American Airlines Refund/Cancellation Policy

The refund and cancellation policy of American Airlines depends on what needs to be refunded. For example, passengers can request a refund for baggage fees, pet fees, preferred seats, same-day flight change etc and more. Some of these will result in a cancellation charge while others will be non refundable.

For more information and to request a refund follow this link. You will need to enter your ticket name and the passengers last name. From there, American Airlines will state whether you are eligible for a refund and provide you with a refund. If you decide to request a refund, the reservation for other passengers will also be cancelled.

American Airlines Flight Compensation in Bad Weather

Weather conditions can influence the ability of a flight to fly safely. This is why some flights can be grounded during spells of bad weather. However, the airline is responsible to do everything they can to make sure the flight departs on time, so by not being prepared for a little snow during winter would not condone a delay.

If the flight disruption was due to genuine adverse weather the airline would not owe passengers compensation. Although, if the American Airlines flight departed from the EU and experienced a delay of three hours because they were not prepared for flyable weather conditions passengers can claim compensation .

American Airlines Flight Compensation for Technical Faults

Most technical faults are not classed as extraordinary circumstances because they are normally due to poor aircraft maintenance. This means that most of the time, if an American Airlines flight was disrupted for a minimum of 3 hours due to a technical fault and the flight departed from the EU, passengers can claim compensation.

If you claim directly and American Airlines dispute their liability to pay compensation, contact Flight Patrol and we can help you. The airline may state it was an extraordinary circumstance but we have a system that can check if this is true.

American Airlines Flight Compensation for Strikes or Industrial Action

Strikes can cause massive flight disruptions and normally happen across unions, companies, airports or airlines. Some of these strikes American Airlines passengers may be able to claim for while others they are not.

In order for flight to be claimable, the disruption would have to affect a flight departing from the EU. Furthermore, the airline must be responsible for the strike, such as staff striking over pay. This would be classed as the airlines fault, as they should have prevented the strike.

If you would like to know whether you can claim for a strike that has affected your flight in the last 6 years, get in touch with Flight Patrol now.

American Airlines Flight Compensation in Extraordinary Circumstances

The airlines may cite the flight disruption was due to an extraordinary circumstance to avoid paying compensation. However, it is not always the case and to gain cash compensation you may have to prove that the reason for the disruption was not due to an extraordinary circumstance. If you can do this, you could be eligible for a claim value of up to €600, as long as the flight departed from an EU country.

We are experts at this, as we have a system to check why the flight might be delayed or cancelled. Get in touch with our team at Flight Patrol to see if we can help you claim against American Airlines.

What to do if American Airlines Offer Vouchers

American Airlines may offer you vouchers to compensate you for the flight disruption. If the flight departed outside of the EU, you should always accept as Flight Patrol could not help you gain compensation.

However, if the flight departed from an EU country, the vouchers value may be less than what can be claimed for. Also, if you accept the voucher you would not be able to claim under the EU Regulation 261 which could potentially allow you to claim up to €600 in compensation.

American Airlines Flight Delay Letter Template

If you wish to claim directly with the airline, it is always best to claim with a letter detailing basic information as this will provide evidence and possibly increase the response time. You should always include:

  • Why you are claiming (delay, cancellation, missed connection or denied boarding)
  • Flight information- number, airports
  • Scheduled arrival time and actual arrival time
  • List of all passengers who you travelled with and are claiming for
  • How much you wish to be compensated by including expenses if eligible.

If you go through us, it will be easier as we can provide all this for you. We will speak directly to the airline to try and get you the compensation you deserve stress-free.

What to do if American Airlines Ignore your Compensation Claim

If American Airlines ignores or disputes your compensation claim, as an individual there is little you can do. The best option would be for you to contact a claiming agency and go through them as they have the resources and knowledge for the next steps. Also, because the claiming agency can progress the claim and take it to court if they do not respond.

This can get costly, but at Flight Patrol we will incur all the costs and it will not affect your claim value. Furthermore, we work a no-win, no-fee basis meaning you will never be out of pocket.

American Airlines Expenses Claim Form

As highlighted in previous sections, you can claim certain expenses depending on the length of the delay and the total flight distance. If you wish to claim for these reasonable expenses, this can be done by using their claim form. In the claim form you will need to highlight how these expenses were needed because of your flight disruption at the airport.

However, these can only be successfully claimed for if your American Airlines flight departed from within the EU, as the regulation that allows expenses to be claimed for is an EU regulation.

Flight Patrol

Here are Flight Patrol we want to help American Airlines passengers if they have experienced a flight disruption. We know the EU Regulation and know when it is on your side. You could potentially be owed hundreds in compensation, so don’t pay for their delay. Contact us now.

Backing up your claim

To give your claim the best chance of success, check with the airline regarding exactly what caused the delay. Collect any evidence you can, such as flight documents, photos and receipts, keep any paperwork given to you by the airline. A successful outcome can depend heavily on evidence – particularly if the flight took place (or didn’t, as the case may have been) a few years back.

Ask the airline staff what you can claim for – both there and then and later on – and make a note of any details you’re given, plus staff names, times and dates. If you can, take contact details of the airline’s other passengers in the same situation.

You may be able to claim as much as €600. This varies according to the distance you flew, or should have flown, with different rates applying to short, medium and long haul flights, as follows.

What you can claim at the airport

For short haul flights, you can claim from 2 hours’ delay or more. The airline should cover the cost of food and drinks, and of 2 phone calls, emails or faxes. For medium haul flights, the  delay time from which you can claim increases to 3 hours, and then 4 hours for long haul flights.

For longer delays of 5 hours plus, you have a right to refuse to board a flight that is delayed by over 5 hours, in which case the airline must refund you or offer alternative transportation.

In the case of a flight being delayed until the next day, the airline must provide overnight accommodation, as well as transfers to and from the airport. Make sure you get any promised services put down in writing and keep a copy. Sometimes, it is not always possible for the airline to provide all of their passengers accommodation in the case of a widespread disruption. If you find yourself paying for your own accommodation, keep all of your receipts and this should be reimbursed by the airline.
